PGIMS Rohtak vaccine trial head catches COVID-19

Dr. Gajender Singh, public relation officer of the institute told the media that Dr. Verma had got herself tested after coming in contact with a COVID-19 patient.

Rohtak: Dr. Savita Verma, principal investigator of COVID-19 vaccine trial at PGIMS Rohtak has been found positive of coronavirus on Monday. Dr. Verma has been associated with the ongoing human clinical trial of covaxin at premier institute since July, 2020. Dr. Gajender Singh, public relation officer of the institute told the media that Dr. Verma had got herself tested after coming in contact with a COVID-19 patient. She was also feeling body ache and feverish, said Dr. Ramesh Verma, co-principal investigator of vaccine trial. The PGIMS Rohtak said that since she was part of the vaccine trial she was exempted to undergo a vaccine trial as per the protocol laid down by the institute. Currently, Dr. Verma has been isolated at her home and keeping well, said the doctors here.

As per an official statement issued here today, Dr Verma is legally bound not to get herself vaccinated as she is the principal investigator of the human-trial project.

“Dr Verma’s name figured in the contact history of a PGIMS doctor who had tested positive for Covid earlier. Hence, Dr Verma got herself tested and was found Covid-positive. She is under home isolation and does not have any symptoms as of now,” says the statement.
