Former Haryana Chief Minister and Leader of Opposition Bhupinder Singh Hooda has condemned the use of brutal force on former Congress President Rahul Gandhi, party General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi and also against Rashtriya Lok Dal president Jayant Chaudhary. He said the attack on these leaders is an attack on democracy.
“In democracy, everyone has the right to raise their voice against injustice, ask questions to the government when they feel that they haven’t done their job, move anywhere and meet anyone. Democracy does not give any government the authority to stop leaders and political workers, become dictators and use brutal force on those who raise their voices,” Hooda said.
The former Chief Minister strongly condemned the use of police force against Opposition leaders, including Rashtriya Lok Dal leader Jayant Chaudhary. Hooda said Jayant Chaudhary, being a descendant of former Prime Minister of the country Chaudhary Charan Singh, was just performing his responsibility as a political activist and the use of lathis on him and his workers was an attack on democracy.
Hooda said the Uttar Pradesh government is constantly destroying the strong democratic traditions of the country in which the Opposition was allowed to peacefully show their protest. “The UP Police also given the same treatment to former Congress president Rahul Gandhi and our general secretary Priyanka Gandhi when they were going to Hathras. It was completely immoral, undemocratic, and illegal act against our leaders who were going to Hathras only to express solidarity with the aggrieved family. This reflects the dictatorship and petty mentality of the UP administration. I demand a high-level, impartial investigation in the use of force against all opposition leaders and policemen, who misbehaved with Priyanka Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, should be given exemplary punishment,” Hooda said.
The Haryana Leader of Opposition said the dictatorial attitude adopted by the government to suppress the voice of Opposition and has no place in democracy. “If the ruling party has some responsibilities in a democracy, then the opposition also has an important role. The balance of both creates a healthy and functional democracy,” Hooda explained.
“If any woman is tortured in any part of the country, it becomes the responsibility of every citizen and Opposition parties to raise their voice to get justice. Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi and Jayant Chaudhary were carrying out this responsibility. Their effort was to meet victim’s family in Hathras and share their pain and find out the true facts about the unfortunate and painful incident. But the UP government banned the media and then the Opposition from going there, which is completely unwarranted,” he said, expressing his solidarity with the family of the victims and Opposition leaders who were physically attacked during the protests.
